What is access control?
Access control is a term used for products/systems which manage access to certain areas.
It is a broad term that encompasses many different products and solutions. It is broken
down into three categories of identification:
Biometric Based Systems
These systems are based on an inherent trait of an individual such as signature, voice, retina scan, and fingerprints. These traits are referred to as PIV or personal identification verifier. This type of system is very secure and cannot be transferred from one person to another. It is, however, harder to read. |
Knowledge Based Systems
This system provides individuals with "key" to remember to achieve access. This could be a coded number or procedure. A common example of this is a persons PIN (or personal identification number), or a password. This system is most commonly used for distance items like internet based account access. |
Possession Based Systems
This system uses a physical object to gain access. This object is usually a token, remote or card (such as a magnetic strip or proximity). A good example of this type of system is a card you would use to access a hotel room, a key card. |
Why would I need access control?
Access control is needed for places which are accessed by multiple employees, tenants, or people. Keys are just not a secure option in today's society as they can be lost, stolen or duplicated. When an employee or tenant leaves or is terminated, you have no way of knowing if their key has been duplicated and if they still have access to your property. Access control gives you an audit trail of exactly who entered your facility and when. More and more landlords and business owners are realizing the benefits and utilizing this type of system.
